Kodama, Spiritual Instinct and More: The Albums Behind the Designs

· The Band

Many of our designs come straight from the worlds of our albums. Here is what the French titles mean, and which designs belong to which record.

How many albums are there?

We've made seven studio albums so far:

  • Souvenirs d'un autre monde (2007): "Memories From Another World"
  • Écailles de lune (2010): "Moon Scales"
  • Les Voyages de l'âme (2012): "The Journeys of the Soul"
  • Shelter (2014)
  • Kodama (2016)
  • Spiritual Instinct (2019)
  • Les Chants de l'aurore (2024): "The Songs of Dawn"

What does Kodama mean?

Kodama is Japanese for "tree spirit" or "echo". The album draws on Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. Its cover, a long-haired girl rising from the water among flowers and skeletal hands, is our Kodama Lotus Pond design. The Kodama Engraving and Kodama Red Leaves designs carry the title in tall, letter-spaced capitals.

Who is the sphinx?

The winged sphinx comes from our album Spiritual Instinct. Neige called the sphinx "the ultimate figure of the enigma", half spiritual, half wild. Find her in the Spiritual Instinct Sphinx and Crouching Sphinx designs. The Spiritual Instinct Guardian spells the title down the side in Japanese katakana.

What about Shelter?

Shelter was recorded in Iceland and left the metal behind for pure shoegaze, with Neil Halstead of Slowdive singing on "Away". Our Shelter Tour South America 2014 design puts a green peacock above the tour name.

And the newest one?

Les Chants de l'aurore came out in 2024. The Les Chants de l'Aurore Tour 2025 design has a golden painting on the front and the North American tour dates on the back, from Boston to Brooklyn.
